The Lincoln Depot Museum is pleased to announce the start of the 2017 season with an Opening Weekend event on April 22 and 23, 2017.
The weekend theme is “New York and the USS Monitor” and features new artifacts added to the museum’s permanent collection, artifacts on loan and a new exhibit highlighting the USS Monitor.
The Opening Weekend will also feature two presenters, one each day, to discuss the USS Monitor, its discovery and preservation and its direct relationship to New York and the Hudson Valley.
Saturday’s presentation, “John Flack Winslow and the Building of the USS Monitor” will be given by Professor Jason E. Schaaf. Professor Schaaf is the Education Supervisor for the Hudson River Valley Institute and Adjunct Professor at Marist College. He will discuss Hudson Valley businessman John Flack Winslow’s quest to build the USS Monitor and the New York connection to the production of the iron used and the Monitor’s construction.
On Sunday, the presenter will be Professor Robert E. Sheridan, who was part of the team that discovered the USS Monitor wreck off Cape Hatteras and author of Iron from the Deep; The Discovery and Recovery of the USS Monitor (2003). Professor Sheridan is a professor emeritus at Rutgers University and previously at the University of Delaware. Professor Sheridan’s discussion, “The Discovery and Recovery of the USS Monitor; An Update,” will focus on the progress of the USS Monitor project since his book was published.
The doors of the museum will open at 1 PM and the presentations will begin at 2 PM each day. Admission will be $10.00 per person with children 12 and under and museum members free.
New Items on Display for 2017
The Lincoln Depot exhibit: “New York and Abraham Lincoln: The Indispensable Relationship,” will include dozens of new artifacts on loan, including large striking oil paintings of four Union Generals of the Civil War and an original 1868 “Council of War” sculpture by John Rogers. A special new addition is a rare Union broadside to encourage the enlistment of African American soldiers. There are also many new additions to the Election of 1860 Exhibit and an expanded Chauncey Depew exhibit, including an 1864 memo from Depew as NY Secretary of State.
An exciting new acquisition by the museum for its permanent collection is a series of original carte de visite (CDV) photos of Peekskill Military Academy Cadets from the Civil War period. These cadets were attending the academy in 1861 and were most likely in attendance when President-elect Lincoln gave his speech at the Peekskill Depot in 1861.
